Administrative and Downtown Council Liaison Updates 5/1/19

By Councilor Amy Lafayette

Hello, Neighbors! Through my role as City Councilor, I act as the Administrative Liaison and Downtown Winooski Liaison. Here is my monthly update on both:

A few weeks ago, a meeting was held between City Treasurer Alexander Anastasi-Hill, Mayor Kristine Lott, City Manager Jessie Baker, Finance Director Angela Aldieri, and myself to discuss the Treasurer’s role and responsibilities.  The Treasurer is one of two positions that reports directly to the City Council (the other being the City Manager). After any given item passes through many layers of approval within the City, the Treasurer performs a final review to check for historical accuracy, ensure items match the budget, and verify that items are coded correctly. In essence, the Treasurer is our financial checks and balances. In the unlikely event of suspected malicious financial activity, the Treasurer would bring concerns directly to Council. During this meeting, we also spent time discussing some of the responsibilities of the Finance Department. The Finance Team recently added staff depth to further ensure segregation of duties, which is a best practice. In the coming weeks, they plan to conduct a review of their financial procedures and make any necessary updates. Overall, it was a very insightful meeting and left me feeling grateful that we have such capable folks at the helm.

Downtown Winooski has been in the process of hiring an Executive Director. Along with business owners, the City Manager, the Mayor, and the Downtown Winooski Board of Directors, I had the opportunity to sit in on presentations with the final candidates. It was inspiring to see how passionate folks were about our city and to hear the innovative ideas they had for taking the organization to the next level. Downtown Winooski hopes to make a decision on a candidate soon. If you’re not already on their email list, I would encourage you to sign up to hear about many events happening in Winooski.
